Winston Boogie Smith, 32, of Minneapolis has been identified by sources close to law enforcement as the man who was shot and killed by a US Marshal-led task force Thursday afternoon in Uptown.

According to a statement from the US Marshals, Smith was wanted on a warrant for felon in possession of a firearm. It stated the man was parked in a car and “failed to comply and produced a handgun.”

It's unclear how many officers fired or which agencies they worked for.

Information provided to WCCO Radio shows Smith's criminal history went as far back as 2008. That history included a May 20th arrest warrant for failing to appear for sentencing after he was convicted of possessing a firearm by an ineligible person.

According to the information received on Friday morning, Smith allegedly displayed a weapon and threatened to "shoot it out" with law enforcement during a domestic abuse incident on May 24.

Other charges listed against Smith include drugs, aggravated robbery, and fleeing police in a car.

Sources also say there is likely no body camera footage of the shooting. U-S Marshals and anyone working for them reportedly are not required to wear body cameras.
