While Twin Cities Pride is a celebration that includes the occasional adult beverage or two, there are plans again this year to carve out space for those who don't imbibe.
It's the third year that sober events will included in the weekend's activities. They include recovery workshops on Friday night, a cookout during the pride festival in Loring Park, and a sober dance Saturday night.
JJ Enblom, himself in recovery, will be the DJ.
"Historically, both communities have been marginalized or outcast," says Enblom. "However, both communities need a place to celebrate not only pride but their recovery, and what this event does is it brings together those two elements."
Zee has been sober for over 20 years.
"LGBTQ people in particular are two times more likely to struggle with addiction, alcoholism, etc.," says Zee. "And I just feel like we need to help each other."
Both say the events are not meant to take away, but rather to add to the pride activities for those who need support in their recovery, but who also want to celebrate during the weekend.
"The tent in the park is a huge opportunity for people to see us visible and connecting and create an opportunity for education, because we have resources there if they need them, want them," explains Zee. "And then most importantly, probably, is to have fun in recovery."
