A rally is happening Wednesday outside Hopkins High School for a teenager who was allegedly attacked and injured at the school last week.

The Queer Equity Institute and Transforming Families Minnesota is hosting the rally for the teen who they say is transgender.

The attack happened last Thursday inside Hopkins High School as a transgender student was leaving a restroom. That's when she was punched in the face. She was then hospitalized with a broken jaw and broken teeth.

Wilder Sovereign is the student's brother and said she has to hold off on eating solid foods.

"She has this possibility of traumatic brain injury, so she has to be careful of like how much like strenuous activity she does," says Sovereign.

Freie reports that the people gathering on Wednesday for the rally are upset with the school for not calling immediately for an ambulance, and that police were not initially called in to investigate the incident.

WCCO has been told the student is at home and recovering after being released from the hospital with many other students still very angry about the situation.

The district says the school is an "inclusive community and it will address any problems that compromise safety and inclusively. "

Police are investigating the attack as a possible hate crime.
