Here we are in mid-October and two Minnesota ski hills are opening for business today.

It may be the earliest season opener for Wild Mountain near Taylors Falls and Andes Tower near Alexandria.

Andes General Manager Tom Anderson tells WCCO's Vineeta Sawkar his crews have been busy the past few nights.

“We get three, four guys out here, and they set up snow guns,” Anderson says. “You’re fighting against the ground being too warm, and the air temperature being too warm, but it seems to work.”

Anderson says the smaller Minnesota hills have a friendly competition each year to see who can open first. This year Wild Mountain beat Andes by exactly one hour.

“We’ve made enough snow over the last two nights,” Anderson said. “We’re just far enough north of the cities where we’ve had some cold temperatures, so we’re going to allow some people to come out and play in the snow out here.”

You can find more information and snow conditions for Andes Tower here, and Wild Mountain here.

Don't expect that "snow" to stick around for long however. An October warmup is on tap for this weekend with many nights in Minnesota expected to reach the 70s.
