St. Paul Police Chief Todd Axtell says he's taken "swift action" against a police officer who shot and wounded a naked suspect over the weekend.

While the chief did not say what action was taken, the Star Tribune is reporting the officer was fired.

"When I ask myself if the officers actions on Saturday night were reasonable and necessary," Axtell said. "The only answer I can come up with is 'no'."

Officers responded Saturday night to North Rice Street and Magnolia Avenue to a domestic call. The suspect was hiding in a dumpster when he emerged naked. A K-9 was released and the man was tased prior to being shot. Police said the man had a knife, but Axtell said today the suspect had no possessions.

The Minnesota Attorney General's Office in partnership with the Washington County Attorney will look into the case to determine if charges are warranted against the officer.

The man who was shot, who has not been identified, remains hospitalized in stable condition.
