The retrial of a man accused of killing a Minneapolis North High School student is getting underway in Hennepin County District Court this week.
30-year old Cody Fohrenkam was sent to prison for the 2022 murder of 15-year-old Deshaun Hill Junior, an honor student and high school quarterback who was walking to the bus stop.
Fohrenkam was convicted in the case and sentenced to more than 38 years in prison, but that conviction was overturned after attorneys argued video used as evidence was illegally obtained. The shooting was caught on multiple surveillance videos presented by prosecutors in the case.
Fohrenkam alleged had been robbed at knifepoint inside a nearby store a few hours earlier and that his decision to shoot Hill was in retaliation.
According to prosecutors, Hill had left school in the middle of the day during a school-allowed release in February 2022. While Hill was out of class, he was shot and killed by Fohrenkam.
Fohrenkam had been found guilty on all counts, second-degree murder with intent, not premeditated, and second-degree murder while committing a felony, in the shooting death of Hill.
At his trial in 2022, it took the jury less than an hour to reach its verdict. Jury selection in the retrial is expected to begin on Tuesday.
