A somber day in west-central Minnesota, where thousands, many of them uniformed law enforcement officers, gathered to say goodbye to one of their own.
It was exactly one week ago that Pope County sheriff's Deputy Josh Owen celebrated his 44th birthday.
It was also the day he died in the line of duty, shot while trying to arrest a domestic assault suspect who had fired at him and two other officers first.
The gymnasium at Minnewaska High School in Glenwood was packed.
On one side, friends and family members.
On the other side, hundreds of officers, many who had never met the man known by many as "Josh-O."
The gym floor was also packed with mourners.
Before them, Deputy Owens' flag draped casket, flowers adorning the back wall, everything bracketed by the American and Minnesota flags.
A member of the Minnesota National Guard, among the speakers was Deputy Owen's Battlion Commander John Anderson.
Also speaking, a tearful Pope County chief deputy Nathan Brecht.
Josh Palmateer, who's been speaking on behalf of Owen's family, talked more about his cousin.
Military honors, including a fly-over will take place outside the school following the service.
Josh Owen was buried at Glenwood Cemetery.
