Minnesota U.S. Senator Tina Smith has announced that she is the first co-sponsor of Senator Ed Markey's bill to expand the Supreme Court.

Smith, who made her announcement via Twitter and a press release, shared that she will sponsor the bill in an effort to "restore balance to the Judiciary and eliminate the filibuster."

Markey's bill would see the Supreme Court expanded from its current 9 justices to 13. Smith shared in her press release that after two Supreme Court seats were "stolen" during the last administration, a balance must be restored.

This wouldn't be the first time that the number of Supreme Court seats would be changed, as it has been done multiple times throughout the nation's history.

However, Smith took a shot at Republicans, saying that they "have been working to politicize the U.S. Supreme Court for forty years, with the help of dark money and the Federalist Society."

She goes on to say that with former President Donald Trump in power, the court was filled with two judges, ensuring an "ultra-conservative court that is drastically out of step with the American people."
