A shooting Tuesday night in South Minneapolis has left a 15-year old boy in critical condition.

The shooting occurred around 6:50p.m. at Phelps Field Park, near 40th and Columbus Avenue South.

Police say the boy was shot in the abdomen and rushed into surgery after being taken to the hospital.

WCCO-TV is reporting that the boy was watching a Twin Cities North Football League game between fourth graders from Minneapolis and Brooklyn Center at the time of the shooting, and that he was a sibling of one of the Brooklyn Center players.

Minneapolis has seen an increased amount of gun violence in 2021, with several of the incidents resulting in children being hit. In September, a 12-year old boy was shot and killed.

There had been six other gunshot incidents involving children in Minneapolis between April and September with two of those dying.
