A small plane had to make an emergency crash landing on a busy Twin Cities' highway Tuesday morning, and thankfully no one was seriously hurt.
The 23-year old pilot, who was not named, took off from the Crystal Airport in the north metro about 7:00 a.m. Tuesday heading to South Dakota with no planned stops. As he was returning around 10:30 a.m., the plane lost power in midair.
It' could have been significantly worse," says Brooklyn Park Fire Chief Shawn Conway.
Conway says there's no doubt that the pilot went through some terrifying moments before crash landing.
"It's on a three-lane highway, with railroad tracks that paralell the highway, in between two major intersections." Conway explained. "And then there was a major powerline that was clipped."
The plane went down about 2.5 miles from the Crystal Airport. The driver of a vehicle on the highway and the pilot suffered only minor injuries.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating.
