South St. Paul Schools are transitioning to an e-learning day due to what they're calling a safety concern.

According to a post on the district website, the district has been working closely with local police and are taking steps to ensure the safety of students, staff and community.

There were no other details shared, and no explanation for what the safety concern relates to.

"We understand this may be unexpected, and we appreciate your flexibility," the district says in a statement. "Our district has been working closely with the local police department, and we are taking this step to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and community. At this time, we do not have additional details to share. We will provide updates as soon as more information becomes available. Please watch for further communication from the district regarding next steps and any additional guidance for e-learning."

"We are currently in the early stages of an investigation of a potential threat of violence directed towards South St. Paul Public Schools," says a social media post from South St. Paul Police. "As a result of this potential threat and out of an abundance caution, the district has transitioned to an e-learning day as we continue to investigate. Additional information will released as it becomes available. Thank you for your understanding as we work to ensure a safe learning experience for all."

This is the second day in a row where a local school has faced some kind of threat. Police are now saying it's safe for thousands of students and staff to return to Rosemount, Apple Valley, and Eagan schools after a threat there on Tuesday.

Those threats were made toward multiple schools in District 196 and now reportedly came from out of state. Eagan Police reported the threatening voicemails discovered early Tuesday morning were not credible and posed no danger to the community. The FBI is now investigating those threats.

ISD 196 oversees more than 30 schools making it among the largest school districts in the state.

The Tuesday closure happened just three months after a 16-year-old boy was arrested for making similar threats to the district, as well as neighboring schools.
