Tuesday promises to be a special day for St Paul's Central High School girl's softball team.

Vice President Kamala Harris surprised the team with a visit during an after-school practice when she was in town two weeks ago. It's then that she personally invited them to Washington DC.

Tuesday they're taking her up on the offer thanks to generous donations from several organizations and individuals.

Central High School Principal Cherise Ayers spoke with Vineeta Sawkar on the WCCO Morning News.

"I've told people there's like a little tear in my right eye that just pops up whenever I think about the generosity of people and the fierce generosity," says Ayers. "They gave and they gave quickly."

With an original fundraising goal of $15,000, they ended up raising twice that amount.

There will be plenty of sightseeing over the next couple of days too. That includes a last-minute tour of the White House.

"Because of some of our amazing Central alums, we have a Central alumni that works in the White House, and was able to get us an East Wing White House tour," explained Ayers.

The team, along with coaches, a few chaperones and Ayers herself will participate in a Women's History Month Event and get to spend more time with Vice President Harris.
