On Wednesday they found out they needed to raise $14,000 to get to Washington D.C. And they're still shaking their heads at St. Paul Central High School on Friday.

Principal Cherise Ayers tells WCCO they're floored by the spectacular generosity of their school family and others, in less than a day raising double the amount needed to send the girls softball team to a Tuesday reception at Vice President Kamala Harris' residence in Washington DC.

Harris made a surprise stop at practice last week when she was in the Twin Cities visiting a Planned Parenthood clinic. Her office followed up that visit with a phone call Wednesday to extend the invitation.

Ayers says it's tough to even begin to place a value on such an opportunity for their young women.

"It's being a part of a community and recognizing what the amazing opportunity this is for leadership for our girls," Ayers says.

She adds that the original goal was $14,000 to pay for the girls' airfare and hotel stays. More than double that amount has come in so far.

Thanks to the extra money, they're now brainstorming other ideas for the visit to the Nation's Capitol and coming up with other historic places to see.
