The St. Paul Police Department hosted the 62nd annual Police Memorial on the south lawn State Capitol Wednesday afternoon.
It was a day of remembrance, as the department honored the 33 officers who have perished on the job.
"We'd like to extend a special welcome to the families of our fallen St. Paul officers. Our hearts cannot know the pain yours endured, but today we stand with you in solidarity," was the message shared at the event.
This year's ceremony significant as another name was added to the list of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
"As you remember, we lost Officer Felicia Riley last year after she succumbed to her injuries from a violent assault that occurred on March 24th, 2010," the memorial continued.
Kurt Hallstrom, Deputy Chief of Support Services, worked with Riley when she was injured.
"It's a day that we respect and honor the sacrifices of the people that have given their lives in the ultimate sacrifice," Hallstrom explained. "But it's also a day where we get to see retirees, and reminisce, and share some stories, and not necessarily camaraderie, but a time to come together and remember."
St. Paul Police Chief Axel Henry and Riley's family are in Washington D.C. to add her name to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.
