St. Paul has officially sworn in their first all-female city council.

Mitra Jalali will serve as council president and expressed her gratitude for fellow council women during the historic inauguration.

"Today is a day I invite you to remember change begins at home," says Jalali. "This council should give everyone a reason to hope. We're here today to take the oath of office and welcome our council leaders to the next four years of working with, and for, our community. And it's my distinct honor to speak to this moment."

With a majority of the council members being women of color and all being under the age of 40, they make up the most racially diverse City Council in the city's history and is the first council in a U.S. city of it's size to hit this milestone.

Councilmember Rebecca Noecker, Ward 2, begins her third term while Councilmember Mitra Jalali, Ward 4, begins her third term. The other returning Councilmember is Nelsie Yang, Ward 6, in her second term.

The four newly elected councilmembers include: Anika Bowie, Ward 1; Saura Jost, Ward 3; Hwa Jeong Kim, Ward 5; and Cheniqua Johnson, Ward 7.
