Families of some 2,000 students in the St. Paul School district are being notified Thursday that their child's school has been chosen for shutdown.
Following a school board vote Wednesday night, six schools effecting about 6% of enrollment will be shuttered over the next two years because of dwindling enrollment and long-term sustainability concerns.
School closings taking effect with the 2022-23 school year:
-Galtier Community School
-Jackson Preparatory Elementary
-John A. Johnson Elementary
-L'Etroile du Nord French Emersion Lower
-Parkway Montessori and Community Middle School
At the end of the 2022-23 school year, Barack and Michelle Obama Elementary School will close.
The original plan was to shutter nine schools.
In in the end, LEAP, Highwood Hills and Wellstone Elementary were spared.
The debate over the last few weeks has been emotional for parents and teachers who have been fighting to keep their schools from closing.
Some of the closed building will be repurposed for other uses.
The vote last night was 5-2, the same result of another vote to keep any schools from closing.
