A name Minnesotans have become familiar with since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic is stepping down.

Minnesota Department of Health Infectious Disease Director Kris Ehresmann has announced that she plans to retire February 2nd after more than 30 years various roles in public health.

Along with MDH Commissioner Jan Malcolm, Ehresmann has been one of the state’s top voices updating Minnesotans on the state of the pandemic since early 2019. Ehresmann announced in a press release that the time has come to step aside.

“Serving as the director of the infectious disease division has been one of the great honors of my life,” Ehresmann said. “Like so many people who have worked in a job they love, I have mixed feelings about saying goodbye. That said, it has been my privilege to work with an amazing team and I have every confidence I am handing the baton to the best in the business.”

Governor Walz praised Ehresmann for helping guide the state’s COVID policies.

“Kris Ehresmann is a true leader, and her experience and skill as a top public health advisor has been instrumental in leading Minnesota through the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Governor Tim Walz. “It has been an honor to work alongside Kris. Her efforts to keep Minnesotans safe and healthy have left a legacy that will impact our state for years to come.”

Speaking to WCCO’s Dave Lee this past March, Ehresmann said she was definitely tired.

“I think we’re in an amazing place, but I know everyone’s tired,” she said.  “I know I’m tired.  I look back on this year and I’m glad we’ve gotten through it.”

Emily Emerson, the current assistant director of the Infectious Disease Epidemiology, Prevention and Control Division, will assume the role of interim director. MDH will launch a national search for a new director.
