Gable Steveson signs NIL deal with WWE

Another Minnesota Olympian is cashing in on his success, not only in Tokyo, but with the University of Minnesota.

Gold medal wrestler Gable Steveson announcing that he's reached a deal with World Wrestling Entertainment that will allow him to finish his collegiate wrestling career as a Gopher while training for a career in professional wrestling.

Minneapolis attorney Lee Hutton works in sports and entertainment law, and he says Steveson is the perfect example of how the NIL (Name, Image and Likeness) rule change in the NCAA allow amateur athletes to benefit from their talents.

"Historically individuals would gain a gold medal, would not be able to participate in endorsement opportunities," Hutton told WCCO's Adam Carter. "We've seen that individuals who were in gymnastics. So, Gable Steveson is basically charting the course as a pioneer for individuals similarly situated."

The NIL rule will also benefit St. Paul gymnast Suni Lee, who won individual gold in Tokyo.

Steveson will be able to train for the WWE while he completes school and tries to defend his NCAA National Championship with the Gophers.
