Minnesota native Suni Lee has announced that she will be going for gold once again as she plans on leaving collegiate gymnastics, so she can focus on earning a shot to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“Today I am sharing a decision that has weighed on me for a really long time,” Lee said in a video shared to her social media platforms.
Lee shared that the feeling of having a gold medal placed around an athlete's neck is indescribable and that she doesn’t want it to happen only once in her lifetime.
Because of this, Lee shared she is leaving Auburn University, where she has competed collegiately, to focus on competing elite and making the U.S. team.
Other gymnasts have been known to do both, and up until recently, Lee had shared that she was unaware if she would return to elite competition.
"I've always had this tiny voice in the back of my mind telling me I wasn't done with elite and wanted to give it another shot," Lee told ESPN. "As you near the end of an Olympic cycle and get closer to the Games themselves, training ramps up to a point where it is completely a full-time job. Seven to eight hours a day, six to seven days a week. I know that to have the best shot to represent my country again, but I need to dedicate that time, and this decision allows me to do that."
Lee shared that Auburn will always have a “special place in [her] heart” after announcing that this season would be her last as a War Eagle.
"I want to be the best teammate I can be and continue the amazing legacy we were able to build last season," Lee said in her video.
