Target is announcing that it will call employees back to work in person in Minneapolis in 2024, but will only require it quarterly.

After facing criticism for having no broad policy for in-person work the company announced it will ask Twin Cities employees to visit their office at least once a week each quarter.

President of Minneapolis's Downtown Council Adam Duininck says he hopes Target's decision will set an example for other largely remote run companies.

"There's a lot of symbolism in them asking their employees to come back downtown for a certain amount of time, and I think there are a lot of other businesses looking to the leaders of the industry to set that standard," Duinick says. "And so I want to thank them for doing that."

This change will still only amount to just 20 days per year, while other Minneapolis businesses require employees spend two or three days per week in the office. Other downtown businesses had asked Target to make a requirement for in-office work in order to bring potential customers back into downtown.

The change will ultimately see around 6,000 employees visit the corporate giant more often than they had been doing, and will likely fare well for the city.

"Obviously, we want the most amount of workers downtown as possible because we think that more activation and more people here downtown means more safety, means more people down here spending dollars, and spending time and creating a vibrant downtown," Duinick explains.
