Opening statements were scheduled Friday in the murder trial of the man accused in the shooting death of a Minneapolis North High School football quarterback, but a request from the defense team lead the judge to delay until Monday.
Jury selection in the trial of 30-year-old Cody Fohrenkam wrapped up earlier this week at the Hennepin County Government Center.
15-year-old Deshaun Hill was was fatally wounded while walking to a bus stop on Feb. 9, 2022.
Hill and his fellow students had been let out of class early that day to attend a protest of the no-knock warrant police shooting of Amir Locke.
Fohrenkam is charged with second-degree murder.
A motive in the shooting is still not clear.
Fohrenkam's attorney argued their client has been held in isolation since jury selection began, and not able to talk with his family. They asked for a delay, which the judge granted.
Outside of the courtroom on Friday, Hill's family expressed anger at the decision.
"(Fohrenkam) is talking about he can't talk to his family," said Hill's mother, Tuesday Sheppard. "I can't talk to my son. He's gone."
Hill was featured in a Showtime television series about his football team and the North High School community.
Fohrenkam's attorney wanted a change of venue for the trial, claiming prejudicial influence of the program.
The defense team was given extra time to gather more information by Hennepin County Judge Julie Allyn, pushing the start of the trial from November to earlier this week.
