The jury is seated and Monday they'll hear opening statements in the murder trial of the man accused in the shooting of a North Minneapolis high school football quarterback.
Testimony was expected to start last week in Hennepin County court in the trial of Cody Fohrenkam. But his defense team convinced Judge Julie Allyn to delay proceedings until Monday.
They said Fohrenkam's anxiety had increased because he was isolated in jail and was unable to have full contact with his family. The trial had been delayed from November to allow Forekam's attorneys more time to prepare. The judge has already denied a change of venue request.
Defense attorneys claim Forenkam can't get a fair trial in Minneapolis because the victim, 15-year-old DeShaun Hill, was part of a Showtime documentary profiling Hill's high school team and community.
Hill was shot and killed last February while approaching a bus stop after he and other students were let out of class early to attend a protest against the no-knock warrant police shooting of Amir Locke.
