Twin Cities hosts the 2023 Gay Softball World Series all this week

One of the largest annual gay sporting events in the world gets underway in and around the metro today. Thousands are in the Twin Cities for the start of the 2023 Gay Softball World Series, billed as the largest annual LGBT single-sport, week-long athletic competition in the world.

Local organizer Greg Fedio says around 3,500 athletes will be in town along with another 1,500 family and supporters.

"We're part of a national organization, and the national organization has 54 member cities throughout the United States and Canada," sayd Fedio. "We'll have 225 teams from those 54 cities."

Events celebrating the series including bar crawls and live performances. The games will be played across a number of sites in the metro. There is also a charity concert on Wednesday, August 30 at First Avenue in Downtown Minneapolis with headliner Taylor Dayne.

The opening ceremony is Monday evening outside U.S. Bank Stadium.
