The extreme heat isn't expected to get to the Twin Cities until the middle of the week, but the Salvation Army has already converted their service centers to cooling centers.

The facilities will be open during business hours through Friday.

The Salvation Army's Dan Furry said the cooling centers offers two things.

"First of all, a nice air conditioned spot where they can rest, and cool off," he said. "And, generally, we will be offering as a service cool water for them to drink, assuming they may need some hydration."

Furry said they've never had to turn away anyone from the seven sites that provide cooling-off services.

"I don't think it's ever got to a point where we just can't handle the volume," he said. "That's not a concern of ours."
