Two people were hit by a car Monday afternoon in Downtown Minneapolis, launching the victims through the window of an empty storefront.
Minneapolis Police spokesman John Elder said one of the pedestrians died. The other remains in critical condition but is expected to survive.
When police arrived at 10th St South and Marquette Ave., one victim was in critical condition and the other was in grave condition. Both were transported to Hennepin County Medical Center.
"He must have been thrown with extreme force," said a man who identified himself as TJ, who rushed to the scene and helped the victims. "I don't think he was (conscious), I think he was already brain dead."
Witnesses said the other victim was conscious and alert. They also said the driver of the car that hit the victims, a white Dodge sedan, remained at the scene.
Another witness, Edrick Young, said the driver seemed to be in some sort of confrontation with another driver that started before the crash.
According to Elder, a car driven by a man in his 20s who "showed signs of possible impairment" drove through a red light heading north on Marquette before 5:45 p.m. He struck another car heading east on 10th on a solid green light, causing the vehicle to spin and strike the victims who were on the northeast corner of the intersection.
Neither driver was injured.
