Six months after deciding to remove the name of Henry Sibley from the east metro high school, the West Saint Paul-Mendota Heights-Eagan district Monday night approved the name Two Rivers for the building.

The school was named for the first Minnesota governor since its inception in 1954, but a year ago residents called for the change because of Sibley's record dealing with Native Americans during the Dakota War.

Sibley was a military leader during the pioneer days, and led his troops against Native Americans during the Dakota War, at one time issuing death sentences to tribal members that were carried out in 1862.

The school board made the decision to remove Sibley's name after hearing from the state historical society and the American Indian Cultural Liason.
