One Twin Cities utility is starting a hiring blitz to help those who want full-time work and to staff up ahead of a major pipe replacement project.
St. Paul Regional Water Services will launch its Utility Trainee program to try to recruit and fully train 10 new full-time employees. The training would include basic job skills, technical utility skill development, and driver’s education. The program is open to anyone–regardless of experience–16 or older.
“This is a legit start to your career,” said Assistant General Manager Racquel Vaske. “If you start this program, and you are able to obtain your drivers license with our support and successfully pass the program, show great work ethic, show that you can catch on to the the things we’re trying to train you in, your next job is waiting for you next spring.”
It coincides with the organization’s recent announcement that it wants to replace all of its lead surfaced pipe within the next ten years. Vaske said it would work perfectly for any of the new trainees to move right into full-time pipe replacement work.
She said the program aims to reach as many people as possible and put them to work serving the millions of residents who use St. Paul Regional Water Services.
“We’ve been trying for years to remove hiring barriers, especially to try and hire people who are within our service area,” said Vaske. “As public servants, we think that it means a lot when people are serving areas they actually come from.”
