Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon visited a class at the University of St. Thomas on Tuesday to push for college students to register to vote.

With the 2022 midterm elections less than two months away, the push for voter registration has begun throughout the country and the state.

Simon shared that college students like Helen Knudson, who registered on Tuesday at the secretary of state's booth, are important and Knudson agrees.

"For some, it's important…but I don't think a lot of people seek it out," she said. Knudson continued saying she thinks "it's important to use [her] voice" to ensure the issues she cares about are represented.

A common misconception is that you can't vote in the state you go to college if you come from another state, according to Simon.

"There's no restriction on someone who's from say Wisconsin or Iowa who's going to school at St. Thomas from registering to vote and actually voting here where they now go to school," Simon said.

Simon also shared that while registration might seem like a bureaucratic term that can be intimidating, it's actually quite simple.

"All registration means is you are who you say you are, and you live where you say you live, that's it," Simon said.
