Still waiting for that REAL ID to show up in your mailbox? Carrying around that giant piece of paper - your "temporary license" - in your wallet? You're not alone Minnesotans.
There are delays in getting REAL ID applications and renewals done and Department of Public Safety leaders say first-time applicants should expect up to an an 80-day wait.
The delay is mainly due to a major increase in applications as the May 7 federal deadline requiring a REAL ID for domestic flights approached.
Director of Driver and Vehicle Services Pong Xiong says while he's aware of the customer frustration, they just don't have the staff capacity to go any faster.
"Still very, very high monthly numbers are coming through," says Xiong. "I mean, we are working really hard to get this delay caught up. I anticipate by the end of the year we'll be back close to where we've been processing."
That standard is around 30-days which puts the DPS nearly three times behind at the moment.
"Frankly, the division is staffed to keep this work moving year round and with the May 7th deadline, as we started to approach the deadline, our application volume just went through the roof," Xiong explained. And we - we're just not resourced to be able to handle that kind of volume."
Xiong says Minnesotans worried about travel disruptions can rest easy however. The TSA is still in what they call "phased enforcement" of REAL ID. They are still accepting other forms of ID for now and MSP Airport is also accepting expired REAL ID's, at least temporarily.
You can also travel with a passport if you have that up-to-date.
Minnesota also has a way where you can check the status of your application. You can access that here.
