A day after winning his second term, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is wasting no time getting back to his office. He met with reporters on Tuesday and says he's humbled to be back at the Capitol today.
Walz says the state is in a good position to make a fresh start on the issues that matter to Minnesotans.
"The really good news is Minnesota state finances are in as solid a position as maybe they have ever been, and we are sitting on one of the largest surpluses per capita of any place in the country," Walz said.
With the economy where it is right now, Walz says there is an opportunity to put the surplus to use by making "communities safe" and investing "in people to make sure we reduce the pains of inflation."
KSTP-TV political reporter Tom Hauser joined News Talk 830 WCCO's Chad Hartman to discuss the election results.
Hauser shared his thoughts on Walz winning reelection and Democrats gaining control of both houses of the Minnesota legislature.
There have been talks about a possible special session taking place to get several vital measures passed in the state, but Hauser shared he doesn't think it's going to happen for anything but public safety, which he says "needs funding now."
"There's a slight possibility of [a session on public safety], but on all of these other issues, I think they will wait until the DFL is sworn into office and in control of the House and the Senate and the Governor's office.
Walz is meeting with House and Senate DFL leadership today to start conversations on priorities for the next legislative session.
