Downtown Minneapolis leaders are hoping to add some liveliness to the city's entertainment district with "Warehouse District Live," on Friday and Saturday nights beginning Memorial Weekend.

The city will be closing First Avenue North between 5th and 6th Streets to car traffic, making the space more inviting and comfortable for pedestrians and people already out enjoying downtown. The plan is to have it open from 7:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. both nights.

Downtown Improvement District spokesman Ben Shardlow says they want to make it a fun environment.

“It's going to include a different mix of things every weekend, but the basic gist of it is there will be opportunities for people to sit, opportunities for people to eat, and a little bit of free entertainment and activities to support a good, positive vibe in the entertainment district,” Shardlow said.

For those concerned about safety, Shardlow says there will be added security and police on hand each weekend. Warehouse District Live runs every Friday and Saturday through the end of October.

Some of the activities they’re planning are Minnesota Twins watch parties, a pop-up T-Ball field, food trucks and picnic tables, street performers and lawn games.

The street closures take effect at 10:00 a.m. Friday mornings and will reopen by Sunday morning.
