After kicking the can down the road for a few years, the federal deadline for getting a REAL ID is fast approaching. Starting May 7 of this year, you'll need the enhanced identification to enter certain buildings, fly domestically and more.

There are questions you may have about the new license and even if it's necessary to have. The Program Director with Minnesota Driver Services Jody-Kay Peterson helps us clear up some of the confusion around it.

First off, what is a Real ID and how do we know if we have one?

"It's a driver's license or ID and the very best way to describe or demonstrate that would be a little golden star at the top right hand corner,"

Why do we need one?

"This is a document that folks will need if they have to fly domestically, or they have to enter any federal facilities."

What happens if you're attempting to fly on May 8th and don't have one?

"There will be some problems there at TSA checkpoints. There's a high possibility that that person will not get past the checkpoint or not even make their flights."

The Department of Homeland Security says travelers will be refused access through security checkpoints without the proper ID.

What if I don't want to bother with it?

"You never know when you will need that real ID compliant document to visit maybe a loved one that you have to get to pretty quickly. And so we just want everyone to be ready and know that in order to fly domestically that they will need that document."

Will minors need a REAL ID to travel?

"No. The TSA does not require children under 18 to provide identification when traveling with a companion within the United States. The companion will need acceptable identification, however."

Does a REAL ID mean I don't need a passport?

"No. You still need a passport or an Enhanced License (available in Minnesota, Washington, Michigan, New York and Vermont only) to cross into Mexico or Canada, or a passport for any other international travel."

You can apply for a Real ID at any Department of Vehicle Services location (click here to see state requirements). You'll need to bring certain documentation with you. Visit your state’s driver’s licensing agency website to find out exactly what documentation is required to obtain a REAL ID.

The Department of Homeland Security says, at a minimum, you must provide documentation showing your full legal name, date of birth, Social Security Number, two proofs of address of principal residence and lawful status.
