Thursday, February 1 marks the beginning of Black History Month and what a better way to celebrate than to have Rondo Night at the St. Paul Winter Carnival.

Rondo is a unique and iconic historically Black neighborhood in the Twin Cities.

"I really looked at that neighborhood as being self contained," says former resident Nietta Presely. "I didn't often have to go out of my neighborhood to find what I needed. So, my doctor's are there. My dentist was there. Our grocery stores were there."

The neighborhood's ties to the St. Paul Winter Carnival are also significant.

"I did research on Black businesses that were highlighted in the green book that dated back to the 1920s, and I read about events that were centered around the Winter Carnival," Presely explained.

She says having this celebration helps relive that participation and highlights the community's legacy and history.

This event is sponsored by the Cultural Star Grant, Xcel Energy, and Sunrise Banks. Attendees can enjoy lively Rondo performances and support local Rondo businesses and organizations while learning about the vibrant history of St. Paul’s Rondo Neighborhood.

Emmy Award-winning actor, vocalist, arts educator, community organizer, and Rondo native T. Mychael Rambo will serve as the evening’s emcee and planned performances by Kevin Jackson of Walker West Music and Rondo’s own Patricia Lacy.

In addition, former St. Paul City Councilmember Russel Balenger will be recognized for his work in restoring Concordia Ave to its original name, Rondo Ave.

St. Paul Mayor Carter and St. Paul City Councilmember Bowie will be in attendance to recognize his successful efforts.

“This was personal for me, not simply an undertaking or action without cause. It was a responsibility to safeguard the historical narrative that shapes the story of Rondo and its descendants,” said Balenger.
