With cold weather comes a new concern: Is your furnace ready?

With temperatures finally dropping this week, Minnesotans may find themselves turning on their furnaces for the first time in a while. They’ll also be hoping they work.

Local HVAC professionals have been busy with preventive service calls over the last several weeks. Mike Buscher with Apollo Heating and Air spoke with our Sloane Martin on the WCCO Morning News about how important it is to take a look at your heating system before it fails.

“We’re Minnesotans, we know what’s coming in October, November,” Buscher says. “So if you can schedule something in the month of October to get your system looked at, that’s going to be way better than waiting until the middle January and having something fail on you, leaving you without heat when the company is a week away from being able to get to you.”

Buscher says it's just as important to service the newer, more energy efficient furnaces as it is for older models.

“Even the manufacturers do recommend having those systems looked at and tuned up,” Buscher told WCCO. “A lot of these newer systems, especially being more high-efficiency units, there’s more moving parts, more calibrations needed to make sure that system’s giving you the efficiency you paid for.”

The typical lifespan of a heating system is between 15 and 18 years, but if you have a repair that costs more $1,000 you may want to think about replacing it according to Buscher.

“There’s a lot of repairs you can do that are $300, $400, $500 to keep your furnace going,” Buscher says. “Just keep in mind that as they get older, just like a car, they’re not as efficient.”
