Dawanna Witt is one year into her term as Hennepin County Sheriff and says she already has plans to run for the position again at the end of her term.

Witt has already faced some difficult tasks in her first year as Sheriff including a spike in juvenile crime and a growing fentanyl crisis..

She tells WCCO Radio's Adam & Jordana those issues only make he want to work harder.

"Well I can assure you, I will run again," says Witt, " You know, I've had a life full of adversity and when people push back, I've had to learn the hard way and push back too."

Witt is also addressing the fentanyl crisis in Hennepin County amid staffing challenges.

Fentanyl is killing one person per day in Hennepin County, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Witt says the drug is being distributed state wide in various amounts and recalled a recent seizure that was particularly disturbing.

"I remember one warrant we recently executed in which a baby was next to a pile of fentanyl," says Witt, "You know, we continue to find it everywhere, I think the wrong thing to say is it's only here or it's only there. It's everywhere and we know that the most minuet amount of fentanyl could be deadly."

Witt says until her office is fully staffed the drug will remain a major issue thought the county and that last year her office seized enough of the drug to kill everyone in the county.
