As leaders of the G7 nations gather in Germany for the first day of the coalition's annual summit, the Russian assault on Ukraine has shifted, with the capital of Kyiv being bombarded with missile strikes Sunday.
Ihor Klymenko, Ukraine's chief of its national police, shared that the bombings have left one person dead and five wounded after a missile struck a residential apartment block in the city.
Klymenko added that among those injured were a 7-year-old girl and her 35-year-old mother, who was pulled from the rubble, NPR reported.
Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine's Minister of Foreign Affairs, shared a Tweet on Sunday showing the girl being taken into an ambulance via a stretcher.
Kuleba called on the leaders of the G7 currently meeting to take action against Russia and come to the defense of Ukrainians suffering in the line of fire.
The girl's grandmother, Natalia Nikitina, spoke with CNN about the attack and shared that she found out online before rushing to the apartment.
"There is nothing worse than losing loved ones. Why do we deserve this?" Nikitina told the CNN team in Kyiv.
"Strategic bombers" were used to hit the capital with "four to six missiles," according to Yurii Ihnat, a Ukrainian air force spokesman.
But Sunday wasn't the first attack the city endured, as Inhat shared that Russia used Tu22M3 long-range bombers on Saturday from airspace over Belarus for the first time in the invasion.
On Telegram, Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko shared that several explosions in one of the capital city's districts prompted search and rescue missions following residential buildings being hit.
"There are people are trapped under the rubble. Some residents have been evacuated, with two victims hospitalized. Rescuers are continuing their work," Klitschko said.
Ukraine has several military buildings in the district, and Vadym Denysenko, the Minister of Internal Affairs, shared that "this is the reason why the Russians are shelling this district."
