President Joe Biden was interviewed by the special counsel overseeing an investigation into his handling of classified documents from his time as vice president on Monday, according to White House officials.

On Sunday and Monday, Biden met with special counsel Robert Hur, who was appointed earlier this year to handle the probe into classified documents that were found at his home and an old office.

The documents were taken by Biden while he was serving as the vice president of the United States and were discovered earlier this year around the same time that classified documents were found in former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home.

“The President has been interviewed as part of the investigation being led by Special Counsel Robert Hur,” spokesperson Ian Sams said in a statement. “The voluntary interview was conducted at the White House over two days, Sunday and Monday, and concluded Monday.”

The New York Times first reported that Biden was going to be sitting down with Hur for an interview.

“As we have said from the beginning, the President and the White House are cooperating with this investigation, and as it has been appropriate, we have provided relevant updates publicly, being as transparent as we can consistent with protecting and preserving the integrity of the investigation,” Sams said in the statement. “We would refer other questions to the Justice Department at this time.”

While Biden first said in August that a sit down with the special counsel’s office had not been requested, this meeting suggests that the investigation is nearing its end.

The probe into former President Trump’s mishandling of classified documents wrapped earlier this year and resulted in Trump being charged by the Justice Department in June.
