What started as a fun day celebrating a 6-year-old's birthday ended in tragedy when a Texas father was gunned down and killed outside of a Chuck E. Cheese.

Calogero Duenes was in the parking lot, carrying a birthday cake for his oldest daughter, when he was shot to death.

The shooting happened Friday in Humble, about 25 minutes northeast of Houston.

Duenes' wife Amber Uresti said she and her two daughters had just walked into the restaurant when gunfire rang out.

"He ran in and he was screaming, 'I got shot, I got shot,'" Uresti told KHOU. "I ran out behind him, my daughters ran out behind me, they saw him lying on the floor."

Moments before the shooting, a car drove wrong way down a parking aisle and Duenes exchanged words with the driver, police said. Surveillance video showed the car almost hit Duenes, according to KTRK. Then, three shots were fired.

Duenes was taken to the hospital where he died.

"He had no weapons," Uresti told KTRK. "He was holding my daughter's birthday cake. He had nothing on him. I don't understand why."

The suspect sped away from the scene in a black Ford car and remains at large. Police have not identified a suspect.

In addition to his 6-year-old daughter, Duenes leaves behind a 3-year-old daughter.

A GoFundMe account for Duenes' family has so far raised more than $40,000.
