LAS VEGAS (WWJ) – Those of us who live in Michigan have certain features we love in our cars during winter, especially heated seats and steering wheels.
And it looks like a new innovation may be on its way to keeping us warm in our cars: heated seatbelts.
“You’re well covered and feel really more comfortable without turning the heat up for the cabin too high,” said Martin Fischer, head of the North American team for supplier ZF.
WWJ Auto Beat Reporter Jeff Gilbert got to check out the technology at the CES tech show in Las Vegas. He described it as “a virtual blanket.” They've also been referred to as "heat belts."
Fischer told Gilbert the idea behind the heated seatbelt is a way to use less heat in electric vehicles. But if the idea becomes popular, it could find its way to gasoline powered vehicles, according to Fischer.
ZF’s website says the company is “shaping the future of mobility,” with a number of products in its portfolio that include autonomous driving, safety and other solutions.
CES opens to the public on Thursday and runs through Sunday.
