Although forecasters expected Tampa Bay to experience a “potential historic catastrophe,” due to Hurricane Ian, the storm actually made landfall further south.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, the city has had a century of luck when it comes to hurricanes. Still, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor warned residents to shelter in place Wednesday, as high winds and heavy rains were still expected in the city.
This week, the Times compiled a list of the worst storms to hit the Gulf Coast bay from the 1800s through 2020.
· 1848 Hurricane
· 1921 Hurricane
· 1935 Labor Day Hurricane
· Hurricane Donna, 1960
· Hurricane Gladys, 1968
· Subtropical Storm One, 1974
· Hurricane Elena, 1985
· Tropical Storm Keith, 1988
· Tropical Storm Marco, 1990
· Hurricanes Charley, Frances and Jeanne, 2004
· Tropical Storm Barry, 2007
· Hurricane Irma, 2017
· Tropical Storm Eta, 2020
Most people in Tampa Bay have not lived through a storm close to Ian’s size, said Jamie Rhome, acting director of the National Hurricane Center, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
When Castor updated Tampa residents earlier today, she said at least 5,000 people in the area had experienced power outages.
“There may be that the idea that we've been through the worst of it, it is yet to come for Tampa Bay,” she said.
By 8 p.m. ET Wednesday, the National Weather Service issued new high wind and flood warnings for the area.
