During the second GOP nominee debate, tempers ran hot, with shots being fired at everyone from the absent former president to the current first lady.
And then there was Mike Pence's sex joke, which felt awkward to many observers.
Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was the candidate responsible for taking a shot at first lady Jill Biden.
While discussing the nation’s public school system, Christie said it was no longer run by the public, but by “the teachers unions in this country.”
“Randi Weingarten and her crew, they are absolutely strangling — they are taking the worst of their members and defending them rather than advocating for our kids.’ Christie said. “And when you have the president of the United States sleeping with a member of the teachers unions, there is no chance that you can take the stranglehold away from the teachers union every day.”
The member of the teachers union that Christie said Biden was sleeping with is his wife, a longtime educator and admitted advocate for the union inside the White House.
Pence tried to lighten the mood by 'admitting' he had been sleeping with a teacher for 38 years, as his wife Karen is a teacher.
"Because by way of full disclosure, Chris, you mentioned the president's situation. My wife isn't a member of the teachers union. But I've got to admit I've been sleeping with a teacher for 38 years and um, full disclosure."
Newsweek reported, "The joke received a smattering of laughter, but was met with silence from much of the audience."
Meanwhile, front runner Donald Trump skipped the debate to show up with striking auto workers in Detroit. And he took a shot at everybody from afar.
Trump suggested none of those at the debate would be his 2024 running mate, commenting: "I don't know, does anybody see any VP in the group? I don't think so."
