Last week the world held its breath as search and rescue teams looked for the Titan submersible, which went missing on an exploration of the Titanic wreckage. Now, days after the famous ship made headlines, Netflix has announced it is re-adding the film “Titanic” to its platform.

The decision has resulted in a bit of backlash for the streaming giant, as it decided to bring back the 1997 classic following last week’s headlines of the implosion that resulted in the death of the five people on the submersible.

The company OceanGate ran the expedition, which cost tourists $250,000 per ticket, for a chance to visit the resting place of the famous ship.

Experts shared that the Titan vessel never made it to the Titanic, as it is believed to have suffered a catastrophic implosion that killed the five passengers on board nearly 1,600 feet from the deck of the ship.

Among those who lost their lives were OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, billionaire explorer Hamish Harding, French diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet, Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood, and his son Suleman Dawood.

Now, days after the incident came to a tragic ending, Netflix announced that “Titanic,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, would return to its platform on July 1.

Not everyone is so happy about the decision, whether on purpose or accident, and many took to social media to call out the streaming company.

“The timing is so wrong,” one user wrote.

Most remarks called the move from Netflix “too soon,” while others joked that the company was probably preparing a multi-episode series based on the tragedy.

While some joked and others criticized, most seemed to agree that it seemed Netflix was “trying to capitalize off a sad tragedy.”
