A high school football game in New York turned bloody on Saturday afternoon after a security guard was shot in the back of the head while trying to break up a fight.
The Utica Police Department shared that the gunfire erupted just after 4 p.m. in a parking lot outside of Thomas R. Proctor High School. The incident was also caught on video and shared on social media.
In the video, more than a dozen people can be seen fighting in the parking lot before at least two gunshots were fired.
While the fight raged on, two security guards attempted to separate the group and stop the altercation. However, one of them can be seen falling to the ground after the bullets were fired.
The security guard was rushed to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition as of Sunday afternoon.
Utica Police Chief Mark Williams said that the fight broke out after the group, which he described as violent, was turned away from the game.
The stadium does have metal detectors, but the group was told they couldn’t enter before the guard could be altered to the firearm.
“He suspected that something wasn’t right with this group, and he refused to lead into the stadium,” Williams said.
The gunman responsible for the shooting, who acted alone, is still on the loose and is also said to be responsible for the altercation turning violent.
A motive for the fight was not shared by police.
The investigation into the shooting and incident remains ongoing.
