1st woman crowned 'Grand Buck Champion' at 10th annual 'Buck Pole Contest'

Richmond, MICH. (WWJ) A St. Clair County woman has been crowned “The Grand Buck Champion” for the first time ever in the 10-year-history of the “Buck Pole” contest at Dick Huevare’s in Richmond.

“Grand Buck Champion,” Alissa Stieler of Marine City, told WWJ’s Erin Vee she shot the 12-point-buck on Firearm Season Opening Day.

“…He came out of the field at about 122 yards, and I shot him at about 75 yards, and I shot him right in the shoulder,” Stieler said.

Stieler, 35, told Vee she had been hunting for 13 years. She and her father have the tradition to go hunting together on Opening Day.

“(My dad) was across the field so he saw everything go down, which was really special,” Stieler said. “He could hear the shots. We wanted to give it some time.”

When she shot the animal, she said it went down 50 yards to the neighbors’ property. They asked permission to retrieve the buck and waited for the DNR agent, then took the buck to the “Buck Pole” at Dick Huevare’s on Main Street to show him off.

People wanted to take pictures with him.

“Everybody wanted to pick up the antlers and hold them in their hands, and—wow, the deer was really taken in Macomb County! It was just shock and excitement," she said.

Stieler also hunted an alligator, in Florida…not here in Michigan.
