President-elect Donald Trump and former President Barack Obama found themselves sitting by each other and having a friendly exchange at former President Carter’s funeral on Thursday.
Cameras caught the pair of presidents exchanging what appeared to be pleasantries as both men could be seen smiling and, at one point, laughing while talking. The moment was a stark contrast from how both men typically speak about each other.
The pair continued their conversation for several minutes and were just two of the former presidents who joined their row at the funeral. The others included the other living former presidents, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, as well as both their wives.
Seated in the row ahead of the former presidents and president-elect were President Joe Biden, First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff.
Trump reportedly touched base with several presidents at the funeral, including former Vice President Mike Pence, with whom Trump shook hands and exchanged words. Former Vice President Al Gore was also present at the funeral.
However, the pleasant exchange between Trump and Obama was the most notable, given their history of criticizing one another. For years, Trump has falsely alleged that Obama was not born in the US and should not have been president.
During the 2016, 2020, and 2024 elections, Obama campaigned hard against Trump, saying he was a threat to democracy.
