Two teenagers have been charged with murder after they allegedly ran down a former police chief with a stolen vehicle while he was riding his bicycle.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department shared the news at a press conference last week, noting that the two suspects were involved in at least three hit-and-run incidents on Aug. 14.
One of the victims they hit, 64-year-old Andreas Probst, was killed as a result of the incident. Probst was once the police chief for the Bell Police Department in Los Angeles County, where he served for 24 years before he left in 2009.
The suspects reportedly filmed themselves while conducting their terror, laughing while they hit the unsuspecting victims. The teens have since been booked into juvenile hall, but their identities have not been shared.
Las Vegas Deputy Chief Nick Farese broke down their joyride at the press conference, sharing that before the suspects hit Probst, they hit a 72-year-old male bicyclist and a white Toyota Corolla.
When the suspects eventually ran into Probst, who was cycling in the designated bike lane, they were recording the collision, laughing as they hit him, Farese said. The chief continued, saying it was “appalling” and a “cowardly act.”
After hitting him, Farese said they drove off, leaving him “for dead on the side of the road.”
Farese said that later that day, the 17-year-old driver of the vehicle was found and arrested by police, but the passenger fled the scene, evading police.
At the end of August, a student at a Las Vegas area school showed their school resource officer a video of the hit-and-run that killed Probst. The video was shared on social media and has since circulated online.
Detectives with the department then began working in the area to try and identify the second suspect before they eventually arrested him last Tuesday.
Probst’s daughter spoke at a press conference last week, saying her father, known as Andy, was a man of honor.
“We are devastated by the senseless murder of Andy,” she said. “Andy’s life was robbed by two individuals who did not believe that the lives of others matter.”
