A woman in South Carolina has been awarded $10 million after she sued Walmart for needing multiple surgeries because of an infection she got from stepping on a rusty nail inside one of the company’s stores.

The jury came to its decision six years after the incident, which has left April Jones in a wheelchair since 2015, her lawyers at Anastopoulo Law Firm said.
Jones reportedly had to have her right leg amputated above the knee after she stepped on the nail. Now, after spending more than half a decade in a wheelchair, the verdict will allow her to purchase a prosthetic and make her house more accessible, the firm said.
The law firm shared that during the trial, one of Walmart’s experts testified during cross-examination that the nail was what caused Jones’ injury.
“The weakness of Walmart’s case, among other things, was their failure to produce a video that they claim showed their conforming behavior to a company policy calling for employees to perform regular safety sweeps,” the firm said. “No such evidence was presented for the duration of the five-day-long trial.”
The jury only deliberated in the case for about an hour and a half after hearing evidence in the trial, which took five days.
