More than 200 Minnesotans, like Colin Powell, have died from COVID-19 after full-vaccination -- making up .007% of all COVID deaths in the state. Powell was 84 and battling multiple myeloma when he died of COVID-19 complications.
But University of Minnesota infectious disease expert Dr. Michael Osterholm told Mike Max on the WCCO Morning News Monday that they do happen because the vaccines aren’t ironclad.
“That rate is many, many times lower than if you weren’t vaccinated at all,” he said. “This is not unexpected, particularly among people who are much older, people who have underlying immune-compromised conditions and it’s all the more reason why the people around those people need to get vaccinated so they don’t spread the virus to them”
Recent CDC data shows the risk of dying from covid-19 is 11 times higher with unvaccinated adults than those who have completed the series.
Osterholm adds that he thinks the Midwest surge has likely peaked in the coming week with lower numbers to follow.
