Local and state traffic safety officials are clocking in a high number of speeding citations so far in 2021.
For just the months of February and March, when an extra enforcement campaign was in place, 23,052 speeding citations were handed out to Minnesota drivers.
During that same time period, 35 of 84 traffic fatalities on Minnesota roadways were speed related, an increase from 17 at this time a year ago.
Figures released Friday show the top speed recorded this year so far is 134 miles per hour in the Rochester area, with the highest speed in the Twin Cities metro coming in at 127 miles per hour in Oakdale.
A year ago, 120 people were killed in speed-related traffic crashes in Minnesota, the most since 2008.
The cost of speeding violations vary by county, but it will typically cost a driver more than $110 with court fees for traveling 10 miles per hour over the limit.
Fines double for those speeding 20 miles per hour over the limit and drivers can lose their license for six months for going 100 miles per hour or more.
