One man is in custody following an 8 1/2-hour long standoff with police in southern Minnesota.
Three were wounded in the early stages of the incident, including an Albert Lea police officer.
Albert Lea police identify the shooter as 21-year-old man who lives in the community.
Police were called at 2:18 Sunday morning on a possible weapons violation at the Shady Oaks Apartment building, located south of Albert Lea's downtown.
When officers arrived, the suspect opened fire, striking three people and a squad car.
One of them was a 30-year-old Albert Lea police officer, who was treated and released at the local hospital with a chest injury.
The other two, one of them 38 years old and the other 52, were hospitalized, with the older man flown to Rochester for treatment.
The arrest was reported by Albert Lea police at 10:48 Sunday morning.
“Our thoughts are with the Minnesotans who were hurt in the shooting in Albert Lea this morning.”
“Thank you to the law enforcement officers, including both local teams and our State Patrol troopers and Bureau of Criminal Apprehension agents, who worked to keep Albert Lea residents safe from further harm," said Walz. "This situation could have been significantly worse, but the suspect is now in custody.”
“We know that one Albert Lea police officer was injured today, and the First Lady and I wish them a quick recovery. Thank you for your bravery and service.” the governor said.
About forty people living in the building were evacuated to a local church, while others were told to stay inside their living quarters.
Police say the building will remain vacant for investigators to go over the crime scene.
